A History of the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast WA
In 1991, the first Governor’s Prayer Breakfast in WA was held as a result of the joint effort between the State Parliamentary Prayer Group and the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship.
The event was driven by the collective desire to see a forum established to pray for our State and nation, to have our own leaders from all walks of life offer their prayers and be seen to do so.
A couple of years later, then-Governor of Western Australia, Major General Michael Jeffery, graciously agreed to undertake the role of Patron of this annual event with subsequent Governors, Lieut. General John Sanderson, Dr Ken Michael, Mr Malcolm McCusker and Her Excellency Kerry Sanderson, agreeing to continue in that role also.
The first event had only 27 people attend, but in subsequent years that number doubled annually until 1995 when 650 people turned out to hear from that year’s guest speaker, American astronaut Charles Duke.
Currently more than a 1,000 people attend the event each year.
The expansion of the Burswood Convention Centre allowed attendance to increase markedly, and now the event attracts between 1000 – 1300 people from across Perth and WA every year.
The growth and success of the event would not be possible without the excellent addresses delivered by the State Governors and our keynote speakers. Over the years, the Committee has always strived to ensure that the high standard for the Prayer Breakfast is maintained.
The breakfast is regularly attended by the Chief Justice, the Governor, the Premier, senior State Members of Parliament, the Police Commissioner or his nominee, High School Students and prominent business and community leaders.
